University Communications is an award-winning, full-service division dedicated to increasing awareness, communicating impacts and spreading the value about UC San Diego to the region, the country and the world. The department works collaboratively with campus departments and the health system to convey the amazing things UC San Diego students, faculty, staff and alumni are doing and help UC San Diego departments implement strategies to reach their audience through marketing, brand management, news and media relations, social media, web and interactive communications, executive communications and visual communications. The department reports to the Associate Chancellor / Chief of Staff within the Chancellor's Office.
The Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) is a member of the Chancellor’s cabinet, reports to the Assistant Chancellor/Chief of Staff and serves as the primary communications and marketing officer for UC San Diego’s main campus and Health Sciences. Directs UC San Diego's communications program which includes the oversight and management of the entire campus' full service communications and marketing organization encompassing Communications, Marketing, Media Relations, Creative Services and Publications, and Social Media Strategy with an annual budget of approximately $10M and 85 employees. Key areas of responsibilities include developing and implementing strategic communications and marketing programs focused on enhancing UC San Diego's visibility and name, and highlighting the accomplishments of UC San Diego at the local, national and international levels. Provides expert advice and counsel to campus leadership on effective communication and marketing strategies.
The CCMO leads the planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications and marketing programs to foster increased awareness, understanding and support for UC San Diego’s mission, vision, accomplishments and needs among internal and external constituencies. Manages a team that provides the full range of communication services, including but not limited to proactive communications, media relations, social media, digital media, marketing, branding, advertising, and the implementation and analysis of tactics needed to execute these strategies.
Works closely with the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Vice Chancellors, Deans and academic leaders and oversees the formulation and implementation of the full range of communications and marketing services for the university’s key initiatives. Manages important and sensitive issues and provides counsel and support to campus senior leadership in developing key strategies for implementing key decisions and in handling of campus-wide issues and announcements of important projects. In addition, the CCMO is the communications point person on crisis communications management for external constituencies.
As a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet, the CCMO works closely with the cabinet, deans, executive leadership and the UC Office of the President in setting overarching strategic priorities and devising communication programs that support university-wide objectives.
Represents UC San Diego in campus-wide and system-wide meetings and discussions to set policy and short- and long-range strategy for University of California strategic communication efforts. Recognized as an influential leader and makes final decisions for the organization and ensures achievement of goals and objectives.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Graduate degree preferred.
Prior experience leading a dynamic Communications and Marketing organization in a Higher Education and/or Healthcare environment highly preferred.
Expert knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements, and the most appropriate or effective applications.
Expert skill to create, develop and implement effective long and short term strategic communications plans. Extensive experience in a management role to design and implement organizational and strategic communication plans that incorporate a clear definition of goals, target audiences, and strategies that include promotional activities, community and public relations and media relations efforts that are in-line with institutional goals.
Extensive knowledge of different modes and initiatives required for managing effective communications and marketing with a diverse array of audiences and cultures at local, regional, national, and international scales.
Significant experience in working with and leading high-performance cross-functional teams to deliver complex communications and marketing programs that are strategic and results driven.
Expert management skills to select, train, lead, direct, guide and motivate professional and support staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
Demonstrated experience in overseeing media relations, marketing and constituent relations in a professional, effective and creative manner.
Demonstrated superior ability to identify, organize, and support activities that draw on and contribute to the effectiveness of state based priority programs and projects within and among communications, state government, alumni, special events, and development departments and their campus constituencies.
Demonstrated negotiation skills and ability to exercise discretion on sensitive matters with staff as well as members of domestic as well as international trade associations, legislative, and executive agencies. Proven ability to communicate at all levels with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
Must be willing and able to travel occasionally.
