The Marketing Communications Strategist is responsible for developing strategic plans to execute brand messaging that inspires prospective audiences to engage with WashU. The strategist creates and/or oversees the development of brand copy and content including, but not limited to, brochures, print, emails, direct mail, website, and social media, and digital advertising. The strategist also works with the Director of Marketing & Communications to oversee the development of creative concepts that identify and utilize smart solutions to marketing problems. In addition, the strategist works with Marketing Communications team members in Admissions & Aid and throughout the undergraduate divisions to enhance Washington University’s brand awareness and reputation in key markets and drive success of program objectives.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Planning: Develop comprehensive understanding of the Washington University’s undergraduate strategy, market demographics and psychographics, brand promise, competitive and other environmental issues, and other factors that drive success of undergraduate recruitment, enrollment, and financial assistance support and use that understanding to assist Director in the development of strategic marketing plans.
Writing and Content Development: Lead the development of strategic communication themes based on a strategic understanding of the brand narrative, tone, voice, and messaging. Coordinate the development and execution of the key communication messages, along with the visuals, to appropriate internal and external channels of communication to meet program objectives. Position researches, interviews, writes, edits, and proofreads.
Creative Development: Coordinate with Director, Marketing Communications team, and Public Affairs to ensure that all marketing and communication efforts are integrated and work collectively in support of programs’ brand strategy and program objectives.
Print Production: Oversee print projects from the initial phase of project specifications to the final stages of production and distribution. Coordinate projects with Production Manager and Marketing Communications team, as well as Public Affairs, to understand the scope of the project, formulate print estimates (including bidding), schedule jobs, and the review proofs through final delivery.

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, marketing or communication required.
Proven experience in developing and facilitating creative communications including keen eye and strong appreciation for the creative process.
Minimum of 3-years of experience in marketing planning AND content/copy development.
Ability to travel to off-campus visits to agencies and production houses, and on-campus locations for meetings as needed.
Master’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or related field with five years of editing, copywriting, copy editing experience
Experience working on integrated marketing campaigns or as part of integrated marketing teams
Experience in writing for and managing the development of high-end, marketing print materials
Experience in writing for digital platforms (web sites, blogs, e-newsletters, etc.)
Experience in creating and managing content for financial aid and/or special populations
Working knowledge of InDesign in order to make simple file edits

The hiring range for this position is $46,215 - $60,079 annually.
