Basic Function: Responsible for recruitment and retention of individual and organization members, planning and executing marketing and promotional activities for products and programs, offering strategic insights and direction for existing and potential new product development, and providing market research and database analysis services to the Society. Manages member services activities including customer service, record maintenance and membership dues billing and processing. Provides staff support to ANS committees and supervises five staff members.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducts primary and secondary research to determine the universe of potential new members; understand the competitive market; identify the needs and satisfaction levels of current and potential new members and other “customers.” Provides market research services to other departments.
Conducts database analysis to profile members, identify major segments and trends, and to target marketing campaigns.
Develops and implements strategies to retain current members and recruit new members, utilizing multi-channel approaches including email, direct mail, telemarketing, space ads and social media.
Maintains/updates all membership areas in the ANS website.
Participates in or otherwise provides guidance to other departments on new business/product development strategies and processes.
Manages the planning, copywriting, design, production and distribution of promotional campaigns for the Society as a whole and for specific products, programs and services, in conjunction with other departments.
Maintains the Society’s Graphic Standards Manual.
Working closely with IT, maintains the Society’s customer relations management system.
Plans and manages the dues billing, processing and collection activities.
Directs member services functions including telephone and email customer service, record maintenance, new account and payment processing. Also includes fulfillment for various programs and campaigns.
Manages the ANS Champions Program, a member giving program.
Prepares the department’s annual operating budget and is directly responsible for meeting revenue and expense targets.
Produces periodic and ad hoc reports on membership, demographics, trends and campaign/program performance.
Serves as staff liaison to the Membership Committee, Young Members Group and other committees as assigned.
Attends the Society’s two major annual educational and governance events to promote membership to attendees and to provide staff support to committees meeting at these events.
Supervises and manages department staff members.
Performs other duties required to support overall Society goals and objectives.
Must be highly knowledgeable of and experienced in association membership and marketing activities; organized; detail-oriented; creative and innovative with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and one-on-one with other staff members and volunteer leaders. Strong advertising/copywriting skills as well as keen analytical abilities highly valued.
Education and Experience:
Undergraduate Degree in Marketing or related field (graduate degree a plus)
At least seven to ten years of association membership and/or marketing experience with a proven track record of success (director-level position a plus).
Experience managing staff members and serving as a staff liaison to volunteer leadership groups
