The Texas State Aquarium seeks a dynamic marketing executive to lead our organization’s marketing efforts as we promote our new 72,000 square foot, $60 million Caribbean Journey addition. The ideal candidate is a leader and strategic thinker with a proven track record managing successful marketing campaigns, impactful media presence, and brand management. The Director of Marketing will provide leadership and guidance for all marketing, communication and public relations activities. The position works closely with the Senior VP & COO as well as the President & CEO of the Aquarium and supervises a small team.

The Aquarium in accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. With over 160 employees, and a $17 million operating budget, 2017 was a transformational year for TSA, as we built on our role as the top cultural attraction in South Texas, and one of the top accredited not-for-profit Aquariums in the nation.
Director of Marketing Key Responsibilities
Development and execution of a $1 million annual marketing and advertising program to drive attendance and increase revenue.
Create and oversee efforts to increase the Aquarium’s visibility through public and media relations.
Plan and oversee efforts to increase the Aquarium’s online presence via social media channels.
Insure the integrity and consistency of the Aquarium’s brand in all materials and communications from each Aquarium department through marketing and communication support and direction.
Act as spokesman for the Aquarium with media if President/CEO or VP/COO are not available or designate this position as a spokesman for specific event or timeframe.
Write and disseminate press releases, media advisories, articles and other communications.
Tracking and analysis of the performance of marketing and advertising campaigns.
Oversight of the Aquarium website content.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, provide input and guidance for strategic and operational organizational planning.
Analysis of complex data to make strategic decisions to maximize the success of the Aquarium’s marketing, and communications efforts.
Manage the creative process and direct the production of Aquarium communication and graphic production such as Magazine, E-Blasts, Annual Report, Brochures, etc.
Negotiate with vendors for services.
Development, implementation of annual budgets, strategic plans, and goals/objectives for responsible departments.
Oversee the staff involved in the planning and execution of marketing, public relations and communications efforts.
Establish and strengthen positive relationships with individuals, media, other attractions, community groups, industry partners, etc.
Qualifications & Requirements
10 years of progressive responsibility in marketing, communication, public relations.
Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
Must have the ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required.
Experience leading marketing programming in a cultural attraction preferred.
Willingness to travel statewide and nationally on occasion.
Energy, enthusiasm and confidence in building relationships on behalf of TSA
Ability to take initiative in planning, organizing and effectively presenting ideas and concepts; independent strategic thinker
Ability to multi-task coupled with a high energy level
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Team player with a collaborative spirit
Passion for education and the marine world preferred
The idea for the Texas State Aquarium was conceptualized by its founders early on to focus on the species in Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The exhibits would contain representatives of the area’s main marine ecosystems.
